What is a heat pump exactly?

A heat pump is one of the most energy-efficient heating and cooling systems available today (yes, a heat pump can cool too—don’t let its name fool you). Unlike other types of heating systems that convert fuel or electricity directly to heat, a heat pump is designed to move heat from one place to another. The outdoor coil of the heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air, even at low temperatures, and transfers it to your home. In hot weather, the heat pump operates in reverse to provide cooling, transferring heat from your home to the outdoors. Because it takes less energy to move heat than to convert electricity into heat, a heat pump uses less energy and costs less to operate than other types of electric heating systems.
